Lead Blanket Radiation Shielding

Since our founding  in 1974, Lancs Industries has catered to the diverse needs of the Nuclear Navy, nuclear power, and Department of Energy sectors. We have production and operational know-how related to many different shielding situations requiring lead blankets. From small local site shielding projects to large scale refueling outages, we can advise on various materials to use and can manufacture any configuration for lead blankets to address your needs.

All Lancs Industries lead blankets are made to order and can be outfitted to ensure integration with your operation. From outside material and grommet placement to installing RFID chips to improve inventory tracking and management, you can feel confident that Lancs Industries can create a product to match your exact needs.

Lead Wool Blankets

The flexibility and effectiveness of our lead wool blankets make them a preferred choice for various applications. Lead wool  blankets are made with strands of lead from .005 to .015 inch diameter and of varying length, placing them in compliance with Federal Specification QQ-C-40 Type II Grade C. This prevents radiation streaming and ensures even attenuation across the shield. Available covers for our Lead Wool Blankets include PVC Laminate, Polyurethane Laminate, Kevlar, and Silicone-Impregnated Fiberglass for hi-temperature applications.

Lead Plate Blankets

While lead wool blankets are somewhat  flexible, lead plate blankets do just what their name implies — they use lead plates as the core material for radiation protection. Our lead plate blankets are available in various widths, lengths and thicknesses and meet Federal Spec QQ-L-201. Available covers for our Lead Plate Blankets include PVC Laminate, Polyurethane Laminate, Kevlar, and Silicone-Impregnated Fiberglass for hi-temperature applications.

Dose Reduction Differences: Lead Wool vs Lead Plate Blankets

Both lead wool and lead plate blankets serve the purpose of reducing radiation exposure. Lead plate blankets generally offer a more predictable and quantifiable level of dose reduction, which can be attributed to their uniform thickness and density. Lead wool blankets, although potentially offering less precise attenuation properties, provide the advantage of some flexibility and adaptability to various applications. The choice between the two types of blankets depends on the specific requirements of the radiation shielding application, including the need for flexibility, the desired level of dose reduction, and the physical environment in which the blanket will be used.

Weight of Radiation Shielding Blankets

The approximate weight of the blankets we produce can be determined by multiplying the dimensions of each blanket by the density of the lead wool. For example, a 1 ft. x 3 ft. blanket with 15 pounds of lead wool per sq. foot will weigh approximately 45 pounds. A 2 ft. x 3 ft. blanket with 10 pounds of lead wool per sq. foot will weigh approximately 60 pounds, etc.

Note: Radiation Shielding dimensions indicate size of lead wool “cake.” Outer border edge with grommets extends about 2” beyond lead on all sides. Lancs Industries also manufactures lead plate blankets in rectangular and gore (tapered) shapes upon request.

Efficient Lead Blanket Racks

To complement our shielding blankets, we also offer versatile lead blanket rack systems. These systems are designed for easy storage and accessibility of both lead and non-lead blankets, enhancing workplace efficiency and safety.

Lead Wool Blankets

Lead blankets are constructed with lead wool or lead plate. Lead wool is the preferred material due to its flexibility in handling. Lead wool consists of fine strands of lead from .005 to .015 inch diameter, of varying length.

Lead Blankets with radio frequency identification (RFID) chips

Description

Lancs can install RFID chips in your shielding so that each blanket can be separately identified, tracked and located in your facility, work area or where ever installed. These chips can be integrated for use with your own locating equipment, or we can supply you scanner units/systems. RFID provides an efficient and automated mechanism for asset tracking and inventory management.
