Lead Free Radiation Shielding

Alternative Radiation Shielding Options

We develop lead-free shielding solutions made from non-toxic metals with strong attenuating capabilities, including tungsten, bismuth, and iron. These high-density metals shield harmful ionizing rays, are safe for human health, environmentally friendly, and reduce the disposal costs associated with lead. The versatility of these materials allows for customized applications across diverse applications. Lancs can advise you on material selection given your specific use-case.

Tungsten’s extremely high density (1.7x higher than lead) offers highly effective radiation attenuation capabilities. Tungsten is the optimal choice for applications where a large amount of weight needs to be concentrated in the minimum possible space. Its density level allows for thinner shields, enabling a reduction in both volume and thickness while maintaining efficacy, making tungsten ideal for use in small spaces.

Applications ranging from nuclear medicine to oil and gas exploration benefit from tungsten shielding. In research activities involving nuclear reactors or cyclotrons, tungsten shields serve as collimators or containers for radioactive isotopes.

Bismuth Lead-Free Shielding

As an attenuating material, bismuth is commonly used for applications in medicine to minimize radiation exposure to sensitive organs, most notably for radiation dose reduction in computed tomography (CT) scans. Bismuth shields are strategically placed over organs to attenuate the x-ray beam.

Neutron Shielding

Neutron Shielding is a polyethylene container with dispersed low atomic element materials to effectively moderate or thermalize incident neutrons. Surrounding the container is Bismuth shielding material to reduce dose from gamma radiation produced from neutron capture interactions. Using this combination, we can effectively attenuate many levels of Alpha particles and its high-intensity by-products.
