It's a common choice in medical and pharmaceutical settings, where bismuth's lower toxicity compared to lead or tungsten alloys is often a deciding factor alongside its shielding performance.

LI-200-FLEX2 NuShield™ Flexible Shielding Designed Uses

Bismuth shielding has gained traction in facilities that need lead-free protection without tungsten's added density and cost, it's lighter to handle, easier to fabricate into conforming shapes, and carries fewer material-handling and disposal concerns than heavy-metal alternatives. At 1x2, the FLEX2 has enough surface area to wrap a small valve cluster or short instrumentation run in one piece rather than needing to reposition a smaller blanket. Tungsten and iron remain available for applications where bismuth's attenuation profile doesn't match your source or attenuation target.
